Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a radiology imaging technique that creates images of the body's anatomy and physiological processes. Strong magnetic fields, magnetic field gradients, and radio waves are used in MRI scanners to create images of the body's organs. The magnet field produced by an MRI 1.5 Tesla machine is 15,000 gauss, which means it is 30,000 times stronger than the magnetic field produced by the Earth. The hydrogen nuclei are aligned, and images for an MRI exam are generated using this strength by the scanner.
The MRI scan is used to analyze or diagnose conditions that affect soft tissue, such as tumors( including cancer), soft tissue injuries(like damaged ligaments), injury or disease of joints, spinal, & internal organs (including the brain, heart, and digestive organs). You will be asked to keep solid food fasting for a few hours before the test and change into a gown during the procedure. A patient with metallic devices in the body, such as a coronary artery stent, pacemaker, ICD or a metal heart valve, artificial limbs, cochlear implant, dental work, braces, cosmetic metal implants (such as in the ears), tattooed, eyeliner, or an intrauterine device (in the case of female patients), is not permitted to have an MRI.
